Family Therapy
At Akua Family Therapy, we believe healing happens through relationships. Our trained Marriage and Family Therapists work with children, teens, and parents to improve communication, rebuild trust, and strengthen family bonds.
Family therapy looks beyond individual symptoms to understand the patterns that keep problems stuck. Whether the challenge shows up as an angry spouse, withdrawn teen, or anxious child, we recognize that every member contributes to the family system and can help restore balance.
Our therapists are trained to observe and assess:
Communication breakdowns
Emotional distance and conflict cycles
Boundary and role confusion
Power imbalances and homeostasis
Life transitions and stress
We use Structural Family Therapy, Emotion-Focused Family Therapy, and Experiential Family Therapy to create real, lasting change. Sessions emphasize empathy, curiosity, and alignment with every family member.
Many families come seeking solutions for “the problem child” or “the angry spouse.” In therapy, we help the entire family see how patterns—rather than one person—maintain the problem. Our process is collaborative, respectful, and deeply transformative.
We help families:
Increase understanding and empathy
Re-establish healthy boundaries
Process conflicts and repair emotional injury
Explore family-of-origin influences
Develop new ways to connect and communicate

At Akua Family Therapy, we believe that families can be one of life’s greatest sources of strength—or stress. Whether you’re navigating conflict, transitions, or breakdowns in communication, family therapy offers a structured, compassionate space to restore connection and understanding. Our licensed therapists help families build healthier dynamics, improve emotional bonds, and learn skills to thrive together.
Family therapy is a collaborative approach to healing that involves two or more members of a family unit. It focuses on the family system as a whole—not just individuals—because what affects one member often affects all. Sessions can include:
Whole-family joint sessions
Parent-child or sibling sessions
Individual sessions (as clinically appropriate)
The goal? To strengthen relationships, improve communication, and resolve conflicts that disrupt family life.
Our primary goal is to address the issues affecting your family as a unit, while also supporting each member’s unique perspective and role. Family therapy can help you:
Resolve conflict with respect and empathy
Support children through change, divorce, or behavioral concerns
Navigate parenting disagreements
Work through grief, trauma, or transitions
Restore relationships through reunification therapy
Build healthy boundaries and communication habits
We don’t come with preconceived outcomes—we support your family in identifying and reaching its own goals.
We treat the entire family unit as “the client,” which means confidentiality applies to the group—not just one individual. If a family member shares something in private, we will assess whether it’s clinically appropriate to bring it into the joint session. We do not keep secrets between family members, as transparency is essential to family healing.
Note: Written consent from all participating family members is required before we can release any session records or information.
We are not custody evaluators and do not make custody recommendations. While we do not automatically participate in court proceedings, we may agree to collaborate with legal professionals when appropriate. Please review our General Policy for details about court-related services and fees.
Therapy sessions are tailored to your family’s needs. Your therapist may recommend weekly or biweekly sessions, with flexibility for joint or individual appointments depending on the treatment goals. Sessions are typically 50 minutes and held in person or via telehealth.
If you're feeling stuck, disconnected, or overwhelmed by conflict, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Family therapy can help you find peace, purpose, and renewed connection.
